Dulux Academy Design & Decorate Challenge
International Wallpaper Week 2019
This year’s theme to International Wallpaper Week is centred around social media and trends.
Social Media, such as Instagram, gives consumers a platform to see a massive range of different interior design ideas. It means we can see what is on trend MUCH quicker than in the past. In 2018 there were 4x more searches for bold print wallpapers on Pinterest than in 2017.
This year, we are looking for experienced decorators with an eye for design and the skill set to successfully hang wallpapers to take part in the Dulux Academy Design and Decorate Challenge 2019.
Designs can be produced using a range of media including hand drawing, painting or computer aided design but must be presented on a 1 metre length of standard 1200 grade lining paper.
Your designs must be original and not infringe any copyright agreements and must be accompanied by a back story of your influences and inspirations and where you envisage your design to be used.
Entries must be received at the Dulux Academy no later than 16th September. Six finalists will then be invited to attend the second part of the challenge where their wallpapering skills will be put to the test at the Dulux Academy, Slough on Friday 11th October. The designs and the wallpapering will both be scrutinised by a judging panel made up from representatives from Dulux Academy, Graham & Brown and guest judges.
With regard to your design the judges will be looking for the following:
- Your designs originality, creativity and WOW factor
- The balance and flow of your design and how the repeat will work through the whole roll
- Suitability of design to function and the context of your design
In support of your design we would like you to include a short written description of your inspiration, the function of the paper e.g. where you envisage it being hung and any other information that helps put your design into context. This should be no more than 500 words.
Whilst we appreciate that you are experienced decorators and have come into contact with lots of wallpapers over time here are some tips on designing your own!
- Take your time considering the bones or framework of your design considering how repeats will work
- Start out your design in black and white then build up the colour as you go
- Create the illusion of variety by rotating, flipping or changing colours of repeats
- Whilst your design may look great on paper consider how it will look on a whole wall
- Experiment with colour – break the rules and have fun!
The scores from the design element and the practical element will be combined and the winner will be crowned the Dulux Academy Design and Decorate 2019 Winner. Along with the title, the winner will be invited up to the Graham & Brown factory in Blackburn, have a guided tour of the design studio and manufacturing process and be presented with a box of wallpaper printed with their own unique design. To finish the visit of the winner will also be treated to a luxury stay at hotel and spa for two.
So get creative and start designing, remember that designs must be sent to the Dulux Academy along with a completed entry form by no later than 16th September.
